When you’re looking for a Nashville maternity photographer, often your first question to me, or that you’re thinking about on your own, is whether you should do an indoor studio maternity session or outdoor session in the field at sunset. I wanted to share an example of the same mama who did two sessions to show you both!
While we chose one outfit for each location for her sessions, keep in mind you can do multiple choices for studio sessions which can range from more intimate (like shown here) to fully covered in dresses and images with your partner are always welcome, etc. as well.
So, here’s the difference and things to keep in mind to help make the decision!
STUDIO
- Great for almost any type of weather without having to worry about a little rain, if you prefer overcast or sun, temperature (most mamas don’t want to be pregnant and outside in Nashville summer heat!)
- More variety. By far studio maternity sessions offer us a higher variety in posing, angles, and furniture used.
- More wardrobe. Again, you can do everything from fully covered dresses to more intimate pieces and everything in between, usually choosing anywhere from 2-4 options as we are photographing your session together.
- Home décor colors. when choosing your photographer, location, and clothing, consider what your home looks like and what will look cohesive in your artwork on you walls. So many of my clients love the tones in the studio that match their home and can easily fit in anywhere.

OUTDOOR
- Perfect for incorporating the natural elements. This session was photographed in December when the field shows a little green still in some spots, and lots of gorgeous brown weeds in others. In the summer you’ll find bright greens out in the field and softer greens with some yellows and oranges for Fall.
- Overcast vs. Sun. You love either the soft overcast of a cloudy day or really want some sun soaked images for your home and albums
- Your Schedule. Your schedule is more flexible in case we have a raining date we need to reschedule, or you prefer a session closer to sunset time vs. morning/midday times of studio sessions.
- Weather. You’re more adventurous when it comes to weather. Heat or cold outside doesn’t bother you at all and it’s worth it for beautiful outdoor images.
